To wear or not to wear, that is the question. Few things seem to divide cycling tribes quite as much as lycra clothing. While for some, a pair of padded bike shorts and a zip up jersey are necessities, for others they are an eye sore that carries certain connotations with it. To be certain, lycra isn’t for everyone—and choosing to wear it or not to wear it is a personal choice.
As with most debates, neither side is right or wrong, necessarily. For the sake of argument though, let’s take a look at some of the pro’s and con’s of lycra.
Lycra is something most riders find a lot of benefit in…but not everyone
Super Comfortable: There’s no two ways about it, properly fitting lycra shorts and a good jersey are some of the most comfortable clothing you’ll ever wear
Love these leggings and bike pants. The extra pocket is really important. Well done on putting this together. A great article that shows what can be done with a little patience and inspiration. Thanks Frau Fleur for the post and hope to see more soon.
I’ve heard it said that how cool you look in lycra padded bike shorts is inversely related to the distance from your bike. In other words, when I’m standing next to my bike, I’m cool. When I walk into the convenience store, I’ve become a dork. That being said, after donning the awkward apparel, I would never ride a bike even for the shortest ride without them. This is a classic picture on how not to wear bike shorts.
There are some things you need to know about choosing appropriate bike shorts. There are a number of different styles and lengths for the various cycling disciplines. Like any other sport, most cyclists are a bit snobbish about how they look. Mountain Bikers like to wear long shorts over their padded ones and touring bikers are similar. We’ll focus on road cycling attire for this post.
There is also a discussion board for those who enjoy wearing lycra and finding like mind lycra enthusiasts.
Next time you are thinking of creating an 1980 aerobics outfit, TPOWIS has lots of advertising and other scanned magazines of lycra exercise wear, unitards, vintage lycra leotards, vintage unitards, videos and other great lycra and spandex pictures.
The workout section has some great pictures of women working out in leotards, tights, unitards and a few other combinations. There are also a few pictures which feature male leotards and unitards, which were once a common place sight in the 1970’s and the 1980’s.
